Press release Munich district remains at the top

IfM Bonn's NUI region ranking shows the current commercial relocations

Once again, the district of Munich seems to be the most attractive place to set up a business or move a company there in 2021, according to the current NUI (New Entrepreneurial Initiative) region ranking. The city of Baden-Baden comes in second place, followed by the district of Miesbach, and the cities of Passau and Leverkusen.

IfM Bonn researchers determine annually how many full-time and how many start-ups as secondary commercial activities took place. Furthermore, they determine how many takeovers and commercial enterprises influxes newly registered in an area per 10,000 inhabitants of working age. The working-age population development can also slightly impact the NUI value.

In comparison to the previous year, 2021 saw significant movement in the group of the TOP 20. While the city of Kempten (Allgäu) and the districts of Dachau, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, Görlitz and Garmisch-Partenkirchen are no longer at the top, the city of Düsseldorf (10th place), the district of Aichach-Friedberg (19th) and the district of Augsburg (20th) have moved up. The district of Marburg-Biedenkopf (12th) has also returned to the TOP 20 group.

In total, nine districts and cities in Bavaria, five regions in Hesse, the cities of Düsseldorf and Leverkusen in North Rhine-Westphalia, the federal capital Berlin, the city of Baden-Baden in Baden-Württemberg, as well as the district of Nordfriesland in Schleswig-Holstein, and the district of Teltow-Fläming in Brandenburg are among the top twenty.

"There are big differences within the federal states. Nine districts in Bavaria and five in Hesse are in the NUI top group, mainly located in the Munich and Frankfurt am Main metropolitan areas. At the same time, many districts in these federal states occupy places only in the midfield or even the lower third of the nationwide ranking. As a result, the overall national average for the two federal states is falling," explains IfM researcher Olga Suprinovič.

Overall, despite the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the propensity to start a business increased in all federal states. The city-state of Berlin again achieved the highest NUI value, followed by Hamburg, Hesse, Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria.
