Digital B2B Platforms - Status Quo and Perspectives for the Industry in Germany

Business models of companies that are based on digital platforms are one of the most valuable in the world when it comes to market capitalization. The most successful platform operators are active in the business to consumer (B2C) sector and can be found in the USA or in Asia. Their platform-based business models had a disruptive effect on the analog business models of the retail and service industries.
The increasing spread of platforms in the business to business (B2B) market raises fundamental questions against the background of the success of a few B2C platforms. What effect do the different digital platform types have in the industrial B2B segment? Will German companies be the frontrunner, or will they be laggards in times of digital transformation? What opportunities and challenges do medium-sized companies face?
The aim of the study is to increase the understanding of industrial B2B platforms and to find answers to these questions.
