Dr Annette Icks answered questions posed by the parliamentary groups on the topic of "bureaucracy" at a meeting of the Committee on Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy in the North Rhine-Westphalian state parliament in mid-January. As one of the experts, she explained why the IfM Bonn believes that a paradigm shift is needed in terms of both thinking about reducing bureaucracy and regulatory strategies.

"Similar to the UK and the Netherlands, we need to move away from the authoritarian state's monitoring and control approach and towards a more trust-based approach. In addition, new laws should always be drawn up with SMEs in mind first – and then supplemented with additional requirements for large companies if necessary," says the IfM project manager.
