Which narratives do media create of the Mittelstand in Germany in the course of the digital transformation?Prof. Dr Friederike Welter (IfM Bonn/ University of Siegen) and Dr Simone Schmid (University of Siegen) examine this question in their paper "In danger of being left behind? - Media narratives of the digital transformation in the German Mittelstand".

The two authors identified four different media narratives: Some media portrayed Mittelstand firms as needing help in the face of digital transformation, while oth-ers highlighted the success of individual firms. Some media pointed out the op-portunities that digitalisation enables for SMEs, while others took a vague view of the future.
