Currently, SMEs are confronted with several crises. The early detection of relevant threats and opportunities enables SMEs and economic policymakers to be prepared and set the appropriate framework conditions. Early detection is often based on economic indicators that develop forecasts with the help of structured data (usually numbers). Moreover, information from text data is not analysed systematically in current economic indicators. Hence, the present study develops an innovative early detection concept that efficiently analyses text data from the media and economy. The AI-based concept can analyse large amounts of text data and extract relevant topics. With the help of multiple tests with real data, we show that the concept delivers reliable results and can recognise relevant topics at an early stage.
