For many decades, the multilateral dismantling of trade barriers and broad trade policy stability contributed to an increase in foreign trade activities worldwide and the emergence of global value chains. In recent years, there has been a resurgence of protectionist measures in certain countries. This is also affecting the foreign activities of the Mittelstand in Germany.
