Participation in external events Number of hybrid entrepreneurs rises

There is significantly more hybrid entrepreneurs in Germany than previously assumed. Dr Olivier Butkowski presented data at the expert discussion of the Forschungsnetzwerk Alterssicherung at the end of May. He said that the number of hybrid entrepreneurs rose from 2.4 million (2001) to 3.4 million (2016).

The IfM researcher also pointed out in his presentation "Hybrid self-employment - development, structure and characteristics" that 90 % of hybrid self-employed are employees with a sideline self-employment activity. Around 26 % of hybrid self-employed persons were active in the production sector (mining, manufacturing, energy supply, water supply and waste disposal as well as construction), around 18 % in the trade, gastronomy, transport/warehousing and information/communication sectors and around 53 % in the other services sector in 2016. About 3 % were self-employed in the agricultural and forestry sector.
