The members of the Enquete Commission on "Reviewing the COVID-19 Pandemic and Lessons for Future Pandemic Events" gathered information in early July on the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic and the effectiveness of the support measures for various sectors in the Bundestag.
Speaking as an invited expert in the meeting, Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Friederike Welter (IfM Bonn/University of Siegen) pointed out how severely small and medium-sized enterprises had been affected by supply chain problems and business closures. She noted that the protective measures of the former government for the economy had therefore been important. The suspension of the obligation to file for insolvency, for example, had played a key role in preventing a “widespread wave of business closures”.
