Business closures are not equally distributed across regions: the highest closure rates for the years 2017 to 2019 are found in urban regions such as Berlin, at 13.2%. The lowest rates are found in rural regions with relatively low start-up rates (such as East Thuringia, at 7.7%). But what is the relationship between start-ups and business closures?
The descriptive study "Patterns of regional business closures: Determining factors and economic consequences" shows that the number of start-ups in a region has a significant influence on the number of closures: where there are many start-ups, there are usually also many closures.
