"The decline in profitability that many businesses have suffered in recent years has led to the number of business transfers currently stagnating," reported Dr Rosemarie Kay in mid-March at the Federal-State Committee for Small and Medium-Sized Businesses in Wiesbaden.
According to estimates by the IfM Bonn, around 186,000 businesses will face succession by 2030 because the owners are leaving management due to age, illness or death. Despite the increasing age of business owners, this represents around 800 fewer businesses per year than in the previous estimation period from 2022 to 2026.
