Does public childcare provision help reduce the gender differences in the propensity of starting a business? Dr Rosemarie Kay, Dr Teita Bijedić-Krumm, Dr Siegrun Brink and Dr Sebastian Nielen explore this question in their working paper ‘Public childcare – its impact on gender equality in entrepreneurship revisited’ using public data for the years 2012 to 2018.
Their research findings show that public childcare provision increases or decreases the propensity of women and men to start a business, depending on the type of business started and the age group of the child in care. Overall, it does not contribute to closing the gender gap.
The IfM Bonn Working Paper series enables researchers who are working on start-ups, self-employment, family businesses and small and medium-sized enterprises to publish their research results before they appear in a scientific journal.
