The aim of this study is to analyze the extent, determining factors, and consequences of firm exit at the regional level. We show that firm exits tend to be more frequent in urban regions with high levels of new business creation. Our analyses also show that exits do not necessarily have a negative impact on regional development, especially if the region is simultaneously character-ized by a high rate of new business creation.
