Pregnancy and early motherhood have a significant impact on women's self-employment, according to research by the IfM Bonn. Dr Rosemarie Kay presented the results of a survey of self-employed craftswomen in her presentation "When self-employed women become mothers – effects on their self-employment" at the 28th Annual Interdisciplinary Conference on Entrepreneurship, Innovation and SMEs (G-Forum) in Stuttgart: Although some of them reduce their working hours around the time of giving birth, many continue working until shortly before their due date and return to work soon afterwards. Nevertheless, they suffer considerable losses in terms of turnover and income.
